MoMA Curator Supports Clara Harris Archival Efforts

July 27, 2014

Recently while visiting the Gauguin: Metamorphoses exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art (http://www.moma.org/) I was introduced to one of its curators.  I told her about the Clara Harris website and its purpose: to showcase and emphasize the worth of this unknown art collection.  She commended the efforts of those involved and confirmed the notion that the recognition given female artists is not commensurate with their actual talent.  She agreed that this situation needs to be addressed but it will take time!

Reading July 22, 2014 Artprice Market Insight article “ Female artists and big money results” supports this condition: “The highest priced female artists have not yet crossed the $10m threshold, while the top male artists are now changing hands for over $100m. This is clearly not a good example of equality”.

We can’t change the experiences of Clara or her female contemporaries.

But we can visit and support women’s art institutions now.

Here are a few suggestions:

WAM: Women’s Art Museum Society of Canada, Edmonton, Alberta

MAWA: Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art, Winnipeg, Manitoba
